In this course I have learned a lot of things with Mr. Gregory, which it leads me to a new way of thinking. In this essay I will write about what I have learned in the last 4 months with LSC 1103 course.

At the beginning of this course my level of writing was very weak, and I could not write a complete sentence properly or without mistakes. Mr. Gregory helped me to see where my mistakes are and how to avoid them. By the time is passing my writing skills improved a lot by daily practicing and summarizing. This subject has a strong connection to my career, which I have to write several reports per day and read many emails; in addition of that if I could not write or summarize, I will face plenty of issues in the future. How Stuff Works

Introduction:

Material possessions are very important for the people and values because they make life easier and more efficient.  A lot of people don’t know where the materials come from and from what it Consists of. Everything has a story; this report explains how the 5 phases of raw material travel in a linear system as described in Story Of Stuff (2007).

Extraction:

The first step of the materials process starts with extraction. Meaning of the extraction is taking the raw materials of the planet, such as metal and wood by used as raw materials for products. Many governments have contributed significantly harm the planet by distorting, cutting and hunting many organisms and  that cause big problem such as change in the climate and also pollute the air and  water ,all of  this because of improving the standard of living of the individual. This is not true reason, the real reason to collect the largest amount of money for their personal interests.

Production:

The second part of this process is called production. At this stage, they use energy to add toxic substances to the fundamental materials that they took from the last stage, which produces toxic products. The biggest part in the society affected at this stage is worker, because they are exposed every day to carcinogens and radioactive substances that cause sometime of death or serious disease and possible to cause diseases to the next generations. This article shows “Toxics, which cause a range of illnesses from cancer to disruption of our neurological and hormonal systems, are so prevalent that they are routinely found in every body tested, even new born babies” (Cook, A., & Shade, R. 2007).

Distribution:

After all this companies need to distribute the product very fast to the consumer and very cheap to keep the flow moving of the product which cause a lot of problems. All this organizations don’t care about anything it is only care about profit, and how much they can takes from the people and governments. They lose a lot of energy and power to transfer to the whole world and keep the design change after a period of time to keep the consumers buying.

Consumption:

The next stage of this process is consumption. At this stage, the consumer will be the victim in this economic process; the real question is how this is done. Economic process depends on how much amount can be sell it in the short time and that will be when the product designed to be Non-permanent so the consumers have to buy new product after short period of time. The studies showed “We have more stuff than ever before, but we’re also more stressed, less happy and working longer hours to pay for it all” (Cook, A., & Shade, R. 2007).

Disposal:

Finally, disposal is the last stage in this liner system. When you want to get rid of some of the material, whatever it is, put it in the garbage. The question is how they are disposed and handle all the garbage that comes out from houses every day? There are several ways to deal with waste and depends from the country to the other. One of these ways is through the burial of waste and this way have negative aspects, affected the lives of fauna and flora of this region and possible cause serious illness for some organisms if the operation was incorrectly. The second way is by burning waste, which leads to air pollution and produces toxic gases such as dioxin.

Consumerism in UAE:

Emirate is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of oil and gas stocks, making it one of the most states that attract people from all over the world. Studies have shown that the UAE is one of the more extravagance countries in the Arab world, individual average spending stood at $21,577 during 2010. UAE government is trying to minimize the damage resulting from the disposal of waste, and has succeeded in recycling 60% of waste to be re-utilized. The article shows “Sixty per cent of the waste is recycled; only a few years ago it was all dumped in landfills” (Abu Dhabi plan to recycle waste - The National, 2013).

Conclusion:

Ultimately must be maintained on this planet and be careful not to pollution by waste and toxic materials. The article shows “This succeeds in reducing the quantity and toxicity of production inputs and waste outputs and slows the overall materials flow to a level the planet can sustain” (Cook, A., & Shade, R. 2007).

Nuclear power

Introduction

United Arab Emirate is one of the ambition countries in the field of energy and one of these areas is a nuclear power. In this essay I will write about the history of nuclear energy and the development that follows this area of energy.

Early history

There have been a number of scientists that experiments led to the discovery of nuclear energy and all of them were live in different times and different places. Nuclear energy wants us back in 18th century in 1896, when French scientist accidently discovered radioactivity was named Antoine Henri Becquerel and from his began the search for nuclear energy. After five decades of the discovery of radioactivity in 1938, the research has been developing to discover of the nuclear fission by two scientists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann.

Development:

After the cessation of World War ll, the world turned to investment in nuclear energy as a source of energy. The United States of America was one of the first governments that invested in nuclear power. In December 20, 1951 was the first time electricity from nuclear power was produced at the experimental station in Idaho in the USA but it was a small amount.  After several years in 1954 the Soviet Union completed the first project to generate electricity from nuclear energy in Obninsk.

Modern developments:

Urged the fears of many governments of global warming and climate change, air pollution and the growing demand for electricity to resort to nuclear energy with a lot of challenges, the most important safety measures and radioactive waste management.

Great nations using nuclear power to produce electricity and heat, and now most of the countries in the same direction to the footsteps. The article shows “Nuclear power plants provided about 5.7% of the world’s energy and 13% of the world’s electricity, in 2012” (Nuclear power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 2013)

At the present time increased energy demand in the United Arab Emirate, this has led the government to take important decisions. One of these decisions based four plants for nuclear power generation in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The plan is to complete the first station generate nuclear energy in 2017 and the rest of these stations by 2020. The article shows “The first 4 UAE nuclear power plants will be located in Braka on the coast of the Abu Dhabi emirate, between Abu Dhabi city and the border with Qatar/Saudi Arabia (Nuclear power and energy UAE,2012).The production capacity of the four stations about 5.6 GW. The reasons that have made the United Arab Emirates government moving toward nuclear energy, its clean energy and conservation of the environment and cheaper than the usual methods of electricity production and better serve the region in the future.

Conclusion

In the end, the history of nuclear power has had many challenges faced by the scientists. There was also the fear of the use of nuclear energy with a little optimism. Nuclear power possible causes many problems if not properly in control, for example, radiation leakage that has occurred in Japan because of the earthquake that happened two years ago. And also made a lot of solutions in the field of preservation of the environment by reducing the emission of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

Reflective Essay 1

                                                                     Reflective Essay 1

In this course, after 8 years since I stopped studying, it starts kind of hard to be on track again. In this essay will write what I have learned with Mr. Gregory, and some problems that I faced during the course until now.
First, I thought this subject is not related to my future career but when I understood it, I can see clearly why I am studying it. In this course I have learned a lot of things such as, summarizing by not copying, picking up important information and neglecting the details. Whenever I write any summary, I have to put a reference because taking someone's writings or thoughts is considered cheating and violating original writer's rights. For referencing I used Bibme.com to help with it, and sure it was amazing. And I feel my reading and writing in English is improving a lot. Also I know that I can recognize the important information and by that I can understand them and rewrite them in my own words. Sometimes with referencing there is a problem and it is about that Bibme.com couldn't find the website that I took the information from so I had to do it manually.
In the end I hope I can learn more from this course and improve myself more and more.

The article shows “the center in Morocco has ambitious plans for the future: there are plans to expand the release efforts to 15,000 birds per season, up from the 12,000 released between August 2009 and March last year” (Todorova.V.2011).Contact with birds has purpose to make birds accustomed to humans to complete the in vitro fertilization process. At the height of the breeding season the scientists are trying to reduce contact with the birds to be released. A number of birds are released every year and a large proportion of them remain alive. The result of the program showed that came with great success.

                                                                       Keep Emirati Sports Culture

The traditional sports are coming from the Bedouin people and it is very worthy to protect these sports. There are a lot of problems threatening Emiratis sport culture. First of all some tourists come to the UAE and impose their culture. Second, Emirati youth seem to lack of interest in sports traditions because of multiculturalism in UAE. But there are groups who want to restore the Emirati culture such as AL Namoos. They show the public about traditional sports which was the main reason for the survival of our ancestors. If education does not include tradition from a young age it will be forgotten with the passage of time. The GCC strives hard to keep the sport traditions alive in terms of competition and award for the winner
